This German-language version of La Rondine brings out the operetta charm at the heart of Puccini’s often-overlooked gem. Originally conceived to rival The Merry Widow, Puccini reimagined the work as a more conventional opera due to the political tensions of World War I. Ljuba Welitsch lends the role of Magda both vocal opulence and undeniable glamour, capturing the bittersweet spirit of the piece. The only drawback is the decision to make significant cuts to the score—an odd choice given the opera’s relatively brief running time.
