La Fanciulla del West
There is something about a (mostly) American cast and an American company presenting La Fanciulla del West that imparts an aura of authenticity to the proceedings. Although all of the singers exhibit exceptional Italian style in their roles, one senses an atavistic quality of American grit in their portrayals.
Maralin Niska is stunning as Minnie, navigating the role’s dramatic demands fearlessly while preserving the character’s vulnerability. Ermanno Mauro is equally impressive as Johnson, and the chemistry between the two leads elevates the experience, bringing Puccini’s ode to Americana to thrilling heights.

Solid performance with regulars from New York's "second" opera house
Maralin Niska is what drew me to this performance. I saw Niska a few times in New York during the 1970s when she was a regular at the City Opera and an occasional at the MET. (Most folks probably know her from the MET film of La Boheme with Pavarotti and Scotto.) I was impressed with her then and still am. I saw her in a range of roles from Musetta to Salome, and she never disappointed. I know it's become a cliche (where's the accent aigu?), but if she were singing today, she would likely be an A-list star. Anyway, on to the performance. Overall it is solid; the sound is very good, but it's not a performance that will send you out to rustle some cattle. It's what a good "provincial" house can offer. Mauro (another staple at the City Opera with Niska) is a capable Johnson but will not overwhelm the listener in the manner of Corelli or Del Monaco. The rest of the class is at least satisfactory. Any fan of Niska (or Mauro) will want this. For those of you unfamiliar with Niska, I recommend anything she has done. I've never been disappointed.
