La Fanciulla del west
Carol Neblett was the perfect Minnie, with a voice that balanced warmth and strength, winning both hearts and ears. This performance is particularly notable as it marks her first time singing a role she would come to own for many years. Plácido Domingo famously described Dick Johnson as one of the most difficult Puccini roles to sing, but his performance here belies that challenge. It could be argued that this was one of his finest roles, perfectly suited to his temperament and baritonal voice.

Here we can hear the young Carol Neblett (28) and the young Domingo (33) in a live performance from Torino three years before their famous DG record and their production can match either with the commercial record or the later DVD from the Covent Garden. Minnie is the emblematic role of Neblett and she sings and plays really fantastically. Domingo is also ideal as Johnson/Ramerrez. A pleasant surprise was Basiola's strong Rance. Sanzogno leads the performance masterfully. Listening his productions I think he was one of the greatest Italian conductors of the last century. Though the sound is sometimes not the best according to my opinion this is one of the most beautiful performances of this opera.
