I had seen this same cast 2 weeks later and was very happy to find this. Tozzi's coat aria is like you've never heard it before.

Corelli counted Rodolfo as one of his favorite roles, singing it quite a few times at the Met alone. Here in his 53 year he is still in good shape, the voice is less pliant than it had been. He transposes the big aria and duet down a half-step, but gives us ringing high Bs. He is very emotional at the end yet is believable. It doesn't sound acted or put-on. Ricciarelli was not yet 30 when this was recorded and her voice is a dream, betraying little of the unsteadiness and effortfulness that were only a few years away. Shane (another Pirate diva) is an excellent Musetta. She makes a lovely diminuendo on the high B of her famous waltz and is a positive light throughout the performance. Walker, Tozzi, and Christopher are all very good as the other Bohemians. Under Segerstam, in fact, the entire performance is very enjoyable.The voices are audible over the orchestra though a little recessed. One gets a real sense of being in the theater. Boheme fans should get this even if they already have 100+ recordings of the opera.
