La Bohème

This performance assembles a cast made up primarily of American singers whose careers were centered in the nation's regional opera houses during the 1960s. That said, I assure you there is nothing provincial about the vocal standards on display this evening. Mary Costa brings vocal glamour and a rock-solid technique to the role of Mimì. If her voice does not quite bloom like that of a born Puccini specialist, she more than compensates with the purity of her tone and an earnest yet understated expression. John Alexander was renowned for his ability to excel in virtually every style, and here he demonstrates that Puccini was no exception. He is unflinching in the dramatic moments while singing with exquisite finesse in the score's more intimate passages. Patricia Brooks exudes effortless charm as Musetta. One only wishes the role afforded her more opportunities to display her prodigious talents, though "Quando me'n vo'" dazzles nonetheless.
