This performance, made for Italian television, is headed by the great singing actor Renato Capecchi. However, any cast of Gianni Schicchi is only good as the sum of its parts and more importantly how they all fit together. Fortunately the whole cast seems fully committed to both the comedy and the treacherously difficult music that Puccini inflicts upon them. The result is an ensemble that is crisp without seemingly academically rhythmic and with the help of conductor Antonino Votto they make every change of meter or tempo seem like an organic reaction to the play. The sound is good.
