Gianni Schicchi
This performance, made for Italian television, is led by the great singing actor Renato Capecchi who brings charisma and star-power to the title role. However, any cast of Gianni Schicchi is only as strong as the sum of its parts—and, more importantly, how well those parts fit together. Fortunately, the entire cast seems fully committed to both the comedy and the treacherously difficult music that Giacomo Puccini demands of them.
The result is an ensemble that feels crisp and tightly woven, without ever becoming rigid or overly fussy. With the guidance of conductor Antonino Votto, they make every change of meter and tempo feel like an organic reaction to the unfolding drama.

Hilarious Performance in Excellent Sound!
I've written before of the "Pirate Gods" and their capriciousness. Here they were very kind, leaving us a delightful performance in excellent radio broadcast sound. I don't know whether or not the video of this performance exists; it almost doesn't matter so vivid are the characterizations even without the visual counterpart.A native Italian-speaking cast counts for a lot in this opera and that's what we have here. Capecchi commands the stage as Schicchi, his mimicry of Buoso Donati very witty and pointed. Ribetti sang Lauretta with Taddei as Schicchi in an earlier recording and she is just as fine here. It's not the most buttery tone though attractive enough; she sounds like a teenager which is exactly right. She sings the optional D-flat at the end with no problem. De Giorgio doesn't have the plangent tone of a Domingo or an Alagna, yet he sounds exactly right as Rinuccio. The supporting cast is made up of first-rate, well-known comprimario singers, all of whom react and respond to each other very naturally (and hilariously). Everyone sounds like they're enjoying themselves. There are a lot of appropriate sound effects adding to the fun.The sound is very clear and correctly pitched. Highly recommended!
