Puccini Gala
If there is anyone left who doubts the greatness of Renata Tebaldi, this gala performance—presented on the 30th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's death—should silence them. Her tone gleams, her top notes ring effortlessly, and the voice seems to pour from limitless reserves. Giuseppe di Stefano is also in fine form, bringing an intensity and stylistic refinement that match Tebaldi's own. Though Giuseppe Taddei shows occasional signs of strain at the top of his range, he completes the trio with strength and presence.

Puccini Would've Been So Happy!
This radio concert from 1954 has been on the pirate circuit for many years. It captures the three singers in their vocal primes. Whoever chose the program did an excellent job of choosing which arias and duets would go together. Aside from the splendid, passionate singing in the arias, this is one of the best accounts of Act 4 of Manon Lescaut I've ever heard. Tebaldi was having a great evening, the middle rich and beautiful, the high C she sings here one for the record books. Similarly, Di Stefano sings with hairy-chested passion, the voice still stunning, caught before he wore the lovely sheen off his voice. Taddei is equally fine, heard in Michele's big aria from "Tabarro" and Rance's brief monologue from "Fanciulla del West".The sound is very good. I thought the Boheme excerpts towards the end sounded a tad sharp, but that may be the natural rise in orchestra pitch in a lengthy concert.All Puccini lovers as well as fans of the singers should have this.

Just listen to the Boheme excerpts to understand the magic of these singers. It isn't just about the voice--though theirs are supreme--it's about the artist giving himself/herself completely to the music, the intention behind the words, and the other musicians, and the moment in time. You will be moved by Rodolfo and Mimi--their youth, their vulnerability, their passion--as if you had never heard them before.
