"la Fanciulla" with Souliotis and Guelfi is and attractive proposition even in 1974 when both singers were nearing the end of their respective careers. Souliotis at barely 32 was becoming vocally unreliable and Guelfi retired soon after this performance. That said what one can hear from Souliotis through this dismal sound suggests this was a night when she was on form. Her voice remains individual, sensual and exciting if perhaps the top of her voice has thinned somewhat. The massive voiced Guelfi is wearingly loud as Rance, but even his voice has trouble cutting through here. The Johnson is the admirable tenor Giorgio Lamberti whose lean attractive Mediterranean sound fares well enough in this battle with the orchestra.The sound quality would suggest an "unofficial" recording from someone in the front row too close to the orchestra with inadequate recording equipment. Voices are unacceptably distant and often disappear altogether. Arias fare better particularly when the voice is not swamped by the orchestra.A disappointing affair, though on second listening, once one has accepted the poor sound and is prepared to listen through the sonic mess, there is enough to attract fans of these great voices.It helps to be very familiar with the opera.
