The Fiery Angel
Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953)
DESCRIPTION
When one thinks of Prokofiev's operas, Italy rarely figures prominently in the imagination; yet The Fiery Angel bears an unexpectedly strong connection to the land of Verdi. Though composed between 1917 and 1927, the opera did not reach the stage until its belated premiere in 1955—fittingly, in Venice. This performance, recorded just a year later, retains the vital sense of discovery. It navigates the opera’s dual sound world—at once steeped in impressionistic color and the lush emotional breadth of late Romanticism—with remarkable assurance.
Christel Goltz imbues the role of Renata with both vocal authority and dramatic allure, projecting the character's fevered intensity without losing tonal focus. Rolando Panerai, in the demanding role of Ronald, deserves particular recognition. The part, expansive in length and technically intricate, lies far from the stylistic ground of his usual repertoire, yet he meets its challenges with admirable ease and control.
