Emmy Loose may not have the tonal purity of Virginia Zeani, the original Blanche, but she grows into the role with emotional resonance, ultimately portraying the character's inner strength with touching clarity. Hilde Zadek and Christel Goltz bring fascinating complexity to the roles of Madame Lidoine and Marie; their vocal similarity subtly underscores the unifying power of faith in spite of their characters' differing origins. Elisabeth Höngen leaves a lasting impression as Madame de Croissy, and Anneliese Rothenberger adds warmth and sincerity to Sister Constance. Despite occasional digital glitches on the second disc, the historical significance and rare documentation of this underrepresented opera justify its inclusion.
