Excellent Performance in Good Sound!
It's so easy to take Domingo for granted, especially as Otello. He hadn't been singing the role for long when this performance was given, the voice at its freshest. He has no problem with the high notes here, making it all the way to top C on "vil cortigiana!" and pacing himself admirably throughout the evening.Price sounds like Heaven as Desdemona nor does she scant the dramatic requirements: she sounds terrified during the murder scene and lets out a hair-raising scream at the climax of it. Bacquier acts Iago convincingly, really sounding like Otello's good buddy before revealing his fangs. His singing is all right though noone would mistake him for an Italian baritone. The supporting cast isn't listed, but that's unmistakably Kurt Moll as Lodovico. He is one of the few basses who can be heard in the third act ensemble.Solti's direction is exciting and propulsive and he does listen to his singers occasionally. Chorus and orchestra are very good. This sounds like it was taken from a broadcast, but a house tape may have been used for Acts Three and Four as some of the singers are off-mic here and there. Furthermore there was some file corruption (clicking) in the last track of the second CD on my copy. It's brief, but disappointing, given how good the rest was.
