Boris Godunov
Few singers have been as closely associated with a role as Boris Christoff was with Boris Godunov, and listening to this performance, it's easy to understand why. His portrayal goes far beyond the imposing figure with a pointy beard—his Boris is a deeply complex character, shifting seamlessly from paranoia to remorse, and in the final scene, to unexpected tenderness. It is a masterful interpretation that fully justifies his legendary status in the role.
The rest of the cast is equally impressive. Regina Resnik delivers a Marina who is both cold-blooded and passionate, bringing striking intensity to the role. Sir Geraint Evans is another standout as Shchelkalov, lending his part a commanding presence. Even the smaller roles are impeccably cast, featuring fine performances from Joan Carlyle, Josephine Veasey, and Edith Coates.
Under the baton of Rafael Kubelík, the performance is shaped with both grandeur and emotional depth, making for a truly compelling Boris Godunov.
