Le Nozze di Figaro
If the cast in this recording seems familiar to many of you it is because this performance was meant as a dry run for Carlo Maria Giulini's Le Nozze di Figaro. Captured in excellent sound, it is almost, if not more valuable than its studio counterpart as it is able to capture the energy from the stage. Fernando Corena shows that he was capable of toning down the buffo to deliver a human and elegant Figaro. Elisabeth Söderström is an adorable Susanna and her voice fits very well. I was never a great fan of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. To me her interpretation always seemed overly thought out. Listening to this recording, however, it is undeniable how ravishing her voice was in its prime not to mention the incredible control she had over it. Newcomer Teresa Berganza overflows with boyish charm as Cherubino. In the smaller roles we are spoiled by the likes of Hugues Cuenod, Heather Harper and Piero Cappuccilli as Basilio, Barbarina, and Antonio respectively.

Live Figaro
I was disappointed in this live Figaro. The singing was a little dry in Act I especially Figaro and Susanna. The ensemble singing was fine but the solo singing not convincing. I did not like Soderstrom's voice as much as I would like for Susanna. Figaro and The Count were also dry and not very appealing. Schwarzkopf is a pro and did a good job as the Countess. Giulini conducted at a fine pace keeping the action moving. The sound is good live mono. I could live without this Figaro.

Sparkling Concert Performance!
Whether or not this was a dry run for Giulini's famous studio recording, it is a charming, well-sung concert performance that Mozart lovers should acquire. Corena is probably best known for his Bartolo in this opera, but he makes an excellent Figaro too. Others have more vocal beauty, but few have his wit. Soderstrom is a lovely Susanna who sings a memorable "Deh vieni non tardar". She and Schwarzkopf blend beautifully in the letter duet and elsewhere. Schwarzkopf lives up to her high reputation in this role. Her "Dove sono" is even better in the studio performance where she would have the advantages of retakes, but her Countess is certainly worth fighting for. Blanc brings elegance and nobility to the Count. One understands why the Countess is still in love with her husband. Berganza is a very feminine Cherubino (she would butch him up more in later performances.) Cuenod makes a strong impression as both Basilio and Curzio. The rest of the cast is also first-rate. Giulini leads a lively romp through Mozart's masterpiece.Since this is a concert performance there is no attempt to create sound effects, but some will prefer that. The sound is excellent.
