Description:

The star power of this performance of Le Nozze di Figaro speaks for itself. But as seasoned listeners of this opera know, what truly elevates a performance is something harder to define—a spark, a sense of spontaneity and connection that transcends star billing. That rare Mozartian magic is unmistakably present here, making this one of the most compelling renditions of the opera I’ve encountered. Kiri Te Kanawa brings unparalleled grace and tonal purity to the Countess, her "Dove sono" as sublime as any on record. Frederica Von Stade is all youthful energy as Cherubino, phrasing "Voi che sapete" with a lyrical finesse that captures the character’s adolescent longing. Hermann Prey fits naturally into the role of Figaro, his affable charm occasionally offset by some intonation issues. Lucia Popp, as Susanna, blends beautifully with Prey and sings with radiant warmth, though she, too, faces some tuning challenges in her Act IV aria. Wolfgang Sawallisch conducts with a rich, Romantic sensibility, offering a persuasive alternative to the historically informed trend emerging at the time. The sound quality is excellent.
