Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro - G. Evans, Grist, Te Kanawa, Braun, Kern, Begg; Davis. London, 1971

$14.95

Description:

Kiri Te Kanawa was first recognized by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, which quickly saw the promise of her singular talent. After an initial stint as a "junior principal," singing roles like Xenia in Boris Godunov and a flowermaiden in Parsifal, she was given her first leading role as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. This recording marks that important debut, and leaves no doubt as to why she was instantly propelled to international stardom. The voice is stunning, of course, but what’s even more remarkable is her sensitivity to Mozart’s style and the maturity of her overall artistry at just 27 years old. Reri Grist has the audience in the palm of her hand from her first vocal entrance to the final bars, while Geraint Evans brings a warm everyman charm to Figaro. Heather Begg, as Marcellina, deserves special mention for combining comic timing with unexpected vocal glamor. The sound is generally good, with Act II in stereo and the remaining acts in mono.
