Splendid Figaro in Excellent Sound!
The audience really got its money's worth the night this was performed. The performers all convey their enjoyment of the music and each other and that, in turn, heightens the proceedings. Berry and Holm are marvelous together and in ensemble; one understands why they were so popular in Europe. De los Angeles is a most sympathetic Countess, one who doesn't allow her momentary doubts to turn into self-pity. Her intonation isn't always perfect, but the audience adores her. They also adore Ludwig whose Cherubino is greeted with vociferous applause. She and de los Angeles also sang Elsa and Ortrud that autumn. It certainly speaks to their skills and professionalism that they were able to embrace such different characters and composers.Cesari was a popular baritone at the time and he is a fine Count. All the supporting roles are performed extremely well. There are a few dropped lines and minor fumbles along the way, but nothing that gets in the way of enjoyment. Kertesz leads a spirited, human performance. The sound is excellent. The break between discs 2 and 3 just before "E Susanna non vien" is a little clumsy (it should've come after "Dove sono"); my copy of disc 3 had some strange noises during "Deh, vieni non tardar". Nevertheless this is highly recommended!
