Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro - Stratas, Berry, Harwood, Krause, Berganza, Sénéchal, Montarsolo; Karajan. Salzburg, 1973

Description:

Herbert von Karajan brings his unmistakable presence to Le nozze di Figaro, assembling a cast of luminaries and yet remaining the unmistakable gravitational center of the performance. His approach mirrors the scale and seriousness with which he tackles the Ring Cycle, though never tipping into heaviness or overt romanticism. Instead, he unearths subtleties in the orchestration—small gestures that illuminate character and situation—elevating the orchestra to the role of a Greek chorus, active in the drama rather than merely supporting it.

The cast responds in kind, forging an ensemble dynamic as cohesive and responsive as a seasoned opera chorus. Teresa Stratas and Walter Berry are finely matched as Susanna and Figaro, each bringing a grounded elegance to their portrayals. Elizabeth Harwood’s Countess, lighter in tone, provides a graceful counterpoint to Stratas, whose Susanna carries a touch more weight; at times, their vocal blend creates an almost fluid interchangeability. Teresa Berganza’s Cherubino, meanwhile, is both sumptuous and spirited, capturing the youthful impulsiveness of the role with boyish charm and vocal warmth.
