Le Nozze di Figaro
Karl Böhm once remarked that conducting Mozart kept him young, and this performance of Le Nozze di Figaro, led when he was already in his eighties, is living proof. Böhm brings a vitality and grace to Mozart's comedy that many conductors half his age would struggle to achieve.
No doubt, he was inspired by a stellar cast of Mozartians: Walter Berry as Figaro, Edith Mathis as Susanna, Margaret Price as the Countess, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as the Count, and Brigitte Fassbaender as Cherubino. This lineup is a testament to an era when larger voices were often cast in Mozart—a practice that added depth and richness to the music. (Why has that tradition fallen out of favor?)

I have two things to confess, neither to my credit: first, I’ve always found Porgi Amor a bit dull. Secondly, I’ve never heard Margaret Price. How did I miss her? What a lovely, creamy soprano. I even enjoyed Porgi Amor, this time around.

Magnificent Mozart in Munchen!
This is another one of those famous Munchen (Munich) casts in Mozart. Everyone knows their roles and is having a good time. More importantly, they're all terrific and work together in this glorious ensemble opera.Mathis is as delectable here as she was in Bohm's studio recording nearly a decade earlier. Berry is a wonderful Figaro. He and Mathis work very well together. Fischer-Dieskau is great as the Count; whatever mannerisms he had work to his advantage here. He is one of the few Counts who clearly articulates the triplets at the end of his aria. Price sings like a dream. Her "Dove sono" earns an ovation of over two minutes; this from the usually reserved Munchners. The ensuing letter duet with Mathis is sensuous and vocally perfect, the two ladies blending to perfection. Fassbaender is a sexy Cherubino, singing her two arias with real distinction. The supporting cast is made up of excellent Munchen regulars. Bohm leads the whole evening with precision and gemutlichkeit. There are a few tape glitches, but they are of little consequence. The sound is very good. If you love Nozze di Figaro you should have this.

AN OUTSTANDING "LE NOZZE DI FIGARO"
What else can be said about a live opera performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" starring the great singers and Mozart artists of the 1970's under the baton of esteemed Karl Boehm?!... Mozart at his best and performed at his utmost!
