Don Giovanni

Theo Adam brings his signature elegance and ease of tone to the title role. As Donna Anna, Anna Tomowa-Sintow offers dramatic soprano heft without any of the edge, while Peter Schreier delivers an impeccably sung and moving Ottavio. Otmar Suitner takes a decidedly Romantic approach to the score, breathing naturally with the singers in a way that enhances both vocalism and textual expression. There is a hiss throughout the recording, and Kay Griffel's Donna Elvira suffers from a lack of preparation in the role.

Overall rating

more repertoire than gala

For a Japan journey the outcome of the performance lacks billance. Adam is certainly elegant, but less charming than h(a)unted and always under pressure. Schreier does have a rather weak day compared to his best delivery of Ottavio. Vogel is very good in voice but mediocre in pronunciation. Most disappointing is Suitner, giving a rushed, all too fast reading forcing the singer to nearly indiffernet gibberish in the recitativi. However, it was interesting to hear this cd and the sound is quite good.
