Don Giovanni

This performance assembles a legendary cast and for the most part delivers on the enormous potential. Roger Soyer is a suave don with a touch of blackness to his voice. Ever since seeing him in the Joseph Losey Don Giovanni, I have always thought that José Van Dam was the ideal Leporello. He brings a charming cynicism to the role without sacrificing any of the character's elegance. His comic timing is also very good. Margaret Price is equally ideal as Donna Anna and Kiri Te Kanawa is a fiery Elvira. So what is the catch, you ask? I am sad to say that it is the dirge-like conducting courtesy of Sir Georg Solti. Almost every number is about 10 clicks too slow and at times it weighs down Mozart's score. The only benefit of this approach is that it gives us extra time to luxuriate in the great singing particularly from Margaret Price.

So. Slow!

Agree with Andy here. Was Sir Georg feeling alright??But—speaking just for myself—I felt the slow speed let me grasp the score in more detail. It’s still uncomfortable though!

Superlative “Giovanni”

“Don Giovanni”, with so many vital characters and such a variety of musical mood, is a most elusive opera, seldom satisfying in the theatre. I have at least thirty recordings of it on my shelves; this live Solti one is one of the few to which I often return, and is in several parts classic, even definitive, certainly worthy of obsession. Those parts range from the dark, dramatically crucial, comic/tragic trios for three bass/baritones to the incomparably celestial trio for Anna (Margaret Price), Elvira (Kiri Te Kanawa), and Ottavio (Stuart Burrows), all in top form and taking the music onto another plane. Soyer is seductive and voracious in voice (as he was in person) as Giovanni. Solti shows the different facets of the opera with great power and colour; every part is extremely well taken.
