This performance harks back to a golden age of Mozart singing when larger voices were routinely entrusted with Mozartian roles. While it may sound somewhat dated in today's "period performance" environment, it's worth appreciating the careful thought and attention to every musical gesture from the exceptional cast, as well as the renowned conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos.

Cesare Siepi fully embodies the role of Don Giovanni, commanding the stage from his first entrance until his descent into hell. Elisabeth Grümmer brings a Straussian richness to the role of Donna Anna, without sacrificing vocal purity. Lisa Della Casa offers poised dignity in the role of Donna Elvira, complementing the strong performances throughout the cast.
