Mozart: Don Giovanni - R. Raimondi, Evans, Moser, Te Kawana, Burrows, Berbié, Lloyd, Van Allen; Mackerras. Paris, 1975
$12.95
Description:
If you've seen Joseph Losey’s film adaptation of Don Giovanni, this cast may seem familiar—many of the same singers appear here. At the time, Rolf Liebermann, then intendant of the Paris Opera, was closely involved with both productions.
The key difference lies in the conductor: Charles Mackerras leads this performance, in contrast to Lorin Maazel in the film. Mackerras brings a lighter, more historically informed approach, shaped by his involvement in the period instrument movement. Maazel, by contrast, favored a more traditionally romantic interpretation.
Kiri Te Kanawa, in her early thirties, makes a strong impression as Donna Elvira, combining tonal purity with a rich sound and thoughtful characterization. Ruggero Raimondi brings a dark-hued bass to the title role, balanced by a charismatic stage presence. Edda Moser, a singer often overlooked in her time, offers a near-ideal Donna Anna—her firm top notes, clear tone, and command of Mozartean style are especially noteworthy.
