Mozart: Don Giovanni - Ghiuselev, Moser, Zylis-Gara, Mathis, Wohlers, Moll; Leitner. Wien. 1977

This performances of Don Giovanni comes from an era at the Vienna State Opera when it was not uncommon to hear multiple great singers perform in the same production over the course of a season. This often meant a meager rehearsal period but it made for some exciting casting. June of 1977 found Nicolai Ghiuselev in the title role. Ghiuselev brings a bass voice that is both robust and suave. Edda Moser is ideal as Donna Anna and makes mince meat out of her two arias. Teresa Zylis-Gara brings ethereal grace to Donna Elvira, legitimizing a character that more often then not can become the butt of the joke. Edith Mathis is a charming Zerlina. The sound is fair.
