Description:

During his tenure in Salzburg, Herbert von Karajan skillfully leveraged the financial resources at his disposal and the power of his name in the music industry to assemble what can only be described as an "all-star ensemble cast." This group comprised singers who were not only at the peak of their abilities but were also willing to set aside personal egos to fully engage in the ensemble. The result is a glorious synthesis of star power and collaborative artistry—a cast as committed to the collective performance as they are to their individual moments of brilliance.

In the title role, Nicolai Ghiaurov is a force of nature. During the late 1960s, his voice retained a clarity and freedom unclouded by the heavier quality that later characterized his singing. Gundula Janowitz is sublime as Donna Anna, spinning radiant lines with effortless grace. Teresa Żylis-Gara brings depth and an ethereal quality to her exquisitely sung Donna Elvira. Mirella Freni’s Zerlina radiates charm and intelligence, while Geraint Evans imbues Leporello with a profound sense of humanity. The cast is rounded out magnificently by Rolando Panerai as Masetto and Martti Talvela as the Commendatore, both delivering performances of remarkable presence.

The sound quality is excellent, capturing the ensemble's exceptional artistry with clarity and balance.
