Die Zauberflöte
Herbert von Karajan leads the forces of RAI di Roma in a performance that manages to balance Italianate warmth with the form and elegance of German Singspiel. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Nicolai Gedda are beautifully matched, both offering refined tone, superb control, and expressive phrasing that solidify their reputations as two of the finest Mozart interpreters of their generation. Giuseppe Taddei delights as Papageno, bringing excellent comic timing and surprising tenderness through his plush baritone. Rita Streich navigates the Queen's demanding arias with precision and flair, though she might leave some listeners wishing for a touch more weight and authority.

Delightful Performance with a Great Cast!
Karajan was associated with Die Zauberflöte throughout his life. He has already made a complete studio recording (sans dialogue) and would record it again for DG decades later. This one for RAI was part of a series Italian radio did with him (he also recorded Hänsel und Gretel in Italian with Jurinac and Schwarzkopf as well as Pelleas et Melisande with Schwarzkopf albeit in the original French) and finds him in his element, less mannered than he would be later on. The singers are terrific and this time the dialogue is performed, but with a different cast of actors. When Myto first issued this performance decades ago somehow the dialogue in Act Two got all lumped together on one track. Opera Depot has found a corrected master so everything is in the right place. Myto also listed the actors and which roles they spoke; that is left out here.Die Zauberflöte goes well in Italian and this a charming, extremely well sung performance, preserved in excellent sound.

The King of Comprimario
This recording is worth the price of admission just in order to hear Plinio Clabassi’s noble, rich baritone in the role of the “Sprecher”. Clabassi was king of the high-plot-impact low-amount-of-stage-time bass and baritone roles.
