Die Zauberflöte
Pilar Lorengar, in the early stages of her career, brings a wonderfully rich and plummy tone to Pamina, already displaying the vocal warmth that would define her artistry. Waldemar Kmentt may not have had the most purely beautiful Mozartian tenor, but his Tamino benefits from an added weight that prevents the character from sounding overly delicate—too often a pitfall in this role.
Walter Berry, as Papageno, seems to relish the opportunity to focus more on charm than vocal precision, using his warm bass-baritone to full comic effect. A true standout is Roberta Peters as the Queen of the Night—a soprano with a secure high F is rare enough, but one who makes it sound effortless is rarer still. Walter Kreppel provides a sturdy, authoritative Sarastro.
The recording captures these performances with excellent sound quality, making for a Zauberflöte that balances vocal finesse with dramatic strength.

Wonderful Performance, Good Sound!
This performance was telecast from the 1964 Salzburg Festival and the video portion can be seen on a DVD released by Video Artists International (vaimusic.com). Everyone gives fine performances - this demonstrates why the Salzburg Festival is so renowned for its Mozart.Lorengar is a lovely Pamina, Kmentt a strong, unwimpy Tamino. Peters has no trouble with any of the Queen's music, even sustaining the top F of the first aria rather than just touching it. There have been other Queens who are more imposing, but few who sing with Peters' confidence and security. Berry is a delightful Papageno (the audience loves him) as is Renate Holm as his beloved Papagena (she is especially good in the dialogue passages, where she uses a charming Viennese accent). Kreppel sings Sarastro's music very beautifully and Schoffler is a distinguished Speaker. The supporting cast is excellent. Kertesz leads a fluent, well-paced performance distinguished for its strength and lyricism.The sound is very good although the voices aren't as closely miked as Met broadcasts. A memorable Zauberflote!

Due to Lorengar it is a wonder. She sings like an angel but her partners are also in their prime. Roberta Peters is an excellent Queen of Night, Waldemar Kmentt a loving and passionate Tamino, who knows how to sing Mozart, Walter Berry is an amusing Papageno and Walter Kreppel a noble Sarastro. István Kertész leds a vivid and authentic performance.
