Die Zauberflöte
Herbert von Karajan offers a grand, expansive interpretation of Die Zauberflöte that may raise a few eyebrows among purists, but gives the opera a sense of grandeur that aligns beautifully with its philosophical and spiritual aspirations. The result is a reading that elevates the work's fairy-tale surface to something more profound and monumental.
In 1974, René Kollo still retained enough lyric warmth in his tenor to deliver a credible Tamino, though the heroic weight of his voice hints at the Parsifal he would soon become. Edith Mathis is radiant as Pamina, bringing grace and poise without being overshadowed by Kollo's heftier sound. Hermann Prey supplies charm and ease as Papageno, and Peter Meven offers a stately, resonant Sarastro. Edita Gruberova, in a hair-raising turn as the Queen of the Night, brings a thrilling intensity to her arias, emphasizing the "dramatic" in dramatic coloratura.
Karajan surrounds his principals with a luxurious supporting cast, including Reri Grist as a bubbly, stylish Papagena, José Van Dam in a standout performance as the Speaker, and a superb trio of ladies sung by Jane Marsh, Trudeliese Schmidt, and Sylvia Anderson.
