Die Zauberflöte

Because Die Zauberflöte is such a perennial favorite (and ticket seller), opera companies will often relegate the casting to “up and coming” (a.k.a. inexpensive) younger singers. Because of this fact, even though it is so ubiquitous in opera houses around the world, to find a first rate cast is all too rare. Fortunately, this performance is one such occasion in which no expense was spared to assemble some of the best artists to remind the world of the merits of Mozart’s mystical fairy tale. Peter Schreier embodies all of the ideal traits for a first rate Mozart tenor: technical security, musicality and exceptional musical taste. Joan Carlyle’s Pamina, in addition to being beautifully sung, has the kind of musical detail that reveals an artist who is not only a great singer but also a great musician. Hermann Prey brings an earthy elegance to the role of Papageno, managing to completely charm the audience. Franz Crass’ bass has the best characteristics of a basso cantante and basso profundo.

Magic Flute

Top notch performance, well recorded. The plastic sleeve was a little hard to get the disks out of, but I've repackaged in a 4-CD jewel case for convenience.

Wonderful Magic Flute

This is a wonderful live performance of MF. As usual, Prey is a great Papageno. I love his voice in any role but especially this one. Suitner is a great Mozart conductor and moves the performance quite nicely. Schreier and Carlyle are well suited and Mesple is an exciting Queen of the Night. The sound is also excellent. I only wish the dialogue was independently tracked but that may be asking too much for a live performance. For anyone who loves Magic Flute, you can't go wrong with this performance.

Pure Mozart

Otmar Suitner and his ensemble present us a memorable performance from Teatro Colón.Suitner a real specialist of Mozart music gave us the true Viennese Classical style. According to the applause Mady Mesplé and Hermann Prey were the favourites of the audience. Mesplé is terrific in the role of the Königin der Nacht - though she spoke terrible in German. Prey is overwhelming as Papageno. Carlyle and Schreier added the beauty to this performance. Though I prefer Frick as Sarastro - he is the most human in this role - Crass made a very good job. The sound is very good. Unfortunately we cannot enjoy such performances in today's time.

Excellent Performance with a Great Cast!

Andy mentions above that Zauberflote is often given with "up-and-coming" singers because they don't cost as much. Buenos Aires may have spent a fortune to get this cast, but it was totally worth it. All of the principals live up to their reputations. Hermann Prey was an obvious audience favorite as he receives applause at his entrance and resounding cheers for Papageno's simple strophic songs; he is delightful. Mady Mesple absolutely nails the high staccati in the Queen's second aria and provides a sense of awe and mystery that many other Queens don't. Peter Schreier sings extremely well as does Joan Carlyle (though her big aria isn't her finest moment). Franz Crass possessed one of the most beautiful basses I've ever heard and he sounds like one might imagine God sounding. All of the supporting roles are well-done (Ruth Margaret Putz is the First Lady, Renate Holm Papagena). Suitner's conducting keeps things flowing. It's good to hear more of his work on this side of the Atlantic. The sound is excellent. Highly recommended!
