A significant portion of this cast would go on to achieve prominence as Wagnerian singers, and traces of that potential are evident throughout this performance of Così fan tutte. That added vocal intensity enhances the characters' heightened emotions without sacrificing Mozart's signature restraint and elegance. Julia Varady and Yvonne Minton are larger-than-life as Fiordiligi and Dorabella, delivering performances full of intensity and charisma. Lucia Popp's Despina is delightfully charismatic, her rich tone adding a touch of voluptuous charm. Peter Seiffert handles Ferrando's demanding music with ease, an especially remarkable accomplishment given the power and size of his voice.

Beautiful Performance in Good Enough Sound!
This is a lovely, spirited performance of Cosi Fan Tutte with terrific singing in all six roles. Varady is a superb Fiordiligi with her masterful singing of both arias. The triplets in "Come scoglio" are cleanly articulated, her command of the role's wide range complete. She also doesn't indulge her habit of abandoning the text when consonants got in the way.Minton is a lovely Dorabella, Popp a sarcastic and funny Despina (the audience loves her). Nicolai and Feller are great in their roles too, Feller in particular shows what a fine voice he had back in the 70s. According to Wikipedia, Seiffert did not make his opera debut until 1978 so this is definitely Rüdiger Wohlers, mentioned by Martin below. His handsome lyric tenor is heard at its best. Pritchard cuts "Ah, la veggio", but includes "Tradito". He keeps his cast on their toes. The sound is good, the voices only slightly recessed. The digital artifacts Andy mentions above don't get in the way of enjoyment.Fans of the singers and the opera should get this!

Great Mozart
Wonderful feminine trio, sisters with large voices, Seiffert exquisite timbre (is he really 21 years old ?), Feller a great specialist of Alfonso. Pritchard definitely underrated as a great mozartian.

I was there as a quite young fellow.But it must be the performance of June 8th 1975, in July that year, there was no "Così".Ferrando is sung by Rüdiger Wohlers and not by Peter Seiffert.How did you get other informations?Thanks again,Martin

Thank you very much for this performance. I heard it as a quite young fellow. It was the time of the Cologne Mozart Cycle with the seven great Operas under the direction of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.This must be the performance of June 8th 1975, not July.Ferrando was sung by Rüdiger Wohlers, not by Peter Seiffert.
