Così fan tutte
An ensemble piece at heart, Così fan tutte works best not with one spectacular performance but with six. Such is the case here. Peter Maag's heavy tempi are the only deterrent to the full enjoyment of this beautifully-cast Così. Teresa Stich-Randall, in one of her best roles, handles the leaps and hurdles of "Per pietà" with aplomb, and Teresa Berganza is fiery, vigorous and altogether charming as her sister. Graziella Sciutti, heard at the tail end of a long career, is starting to sound a little mature for an ingenue, which lends her Despina a certain world-weary charm. The men are no less well cast - Wladimiro Ganzarolli's big, buff sound and specificity of tone make him an ideal Guglielmo, Renzo Casellato is an effortlessly lyrical Ferrando, and Sesto Bruscantini is luxury casting as a cynical, jocular Alfonso. The recorded audience clearly enjoyed themselves as much as I did.

Excellent Performance in Excellent Sound!
Both Andy and another reviewer have already described how good this performance is so I will only agree and add just a few thoughts.Cosi fan tutte is a long opera and cuts are to be expected in a live performance. Maag cuts Ferrando's two arias in the second act, a pity because Casellato would have sung them very well. As it is, he sings "Un aura amorosa" with melting beauty, phrasing with a grace that isn't heard very often. Maag doesn't cut "Per pieta" and E amore un ladroncello " as he does in the Venice performance with Deutekom and Troyanos (also available from Opera Depot). A very good thing too because Stich-Randall and Berganza sing them superbly. There are trims in the recitatives that serve to tighten things up.Four of the six soloists were native Italian speakers which always is a plus (not that Stich-Randall and Berganza are any slouches in the language department).The sound is excellent throughout. If you love this opera or these singers, you need this in your collection!

Great Cosi
I love this performance of Cosi. I bought it because I love Teresa Stich Randall and I was not disappointed. She sings beautifully. The rest of the cast is also very fine and blend nicely in the ensembles. TSR has sung this role with Berganza before and also sung with Maag in 1967. This shows throughout the performance. The conducting is warm and funny, exactly what is needed in Cosi. Just an fyi, the tenor is strained at times, but that does not ruin the liveliness of the performance. The sound is excellent, especially for a live theatrical performance. Bravo and thanks to Opera Depot for making this available.
