Terrific Performance in Excellent Sound!
This Cosi fits neatly on two discs with one act per disc - so you know there are quite a few cuts. Rosbaud moves things along well though and leads a spirited, forthright rendition of this bizarre opera.Stich-Randall and Berganza partner each other beautifully. Each is outstanding in her arias, but the ensemble is what makes this opera go. Alva and Panerai also blend well and form a cogent quartet with the women. Adani is in fresher voice here than elsewhere and her Despina is full of sass and sarcasm. Cortis is one of the few Alfonsos who manages to stand-out on his own. He proves to be a wise man, but is not as cruel as some others I've heard. The sound is very good throughout with no problems that I heard.

I enjoyed this performance very much. It is light, fleet, and transparent, with a very balanced cast. While I liked all of the singers, I was pleasantly surprised by Mariella Adani's Despina. I had only heard this singer as Musetta on the Boheme recording with Gedda and Freni. I would recommend this recording to anyone who likes Mozart that is crisp and clean and sung with much style and grace.
