For the most part the cast of this performance of Così fan tutte makes an excellent case for Mozart in English. Using a translation loosely based on Ruth and Thomas Martin’s famous English version, the cast brings a sense of fun combined with excellent diction to create an immediacy that you might expect from a local Gilbert and Sullivan troupe coupled with the grandeur of opera at the highest level of skill and polish. Elizabeth Harwood and Janet Baker make the very sensible choice of not playing for too many laughs, conveying their respective parts with honesty. Janet Baker is particularly outstanding as a powerhouse Dorabella. John Shirley-Quirk stands out as a surprisingly youthful Don Alfonso. Unfortunately, Kurt Westi does not seem up to the task of Ferrando’s devilish vocal writing. The sound is very good.
BONUS:
Elizabeth Harwood and Janet Baker sing excerpts from Der Rosenkavalier and Les Troyens in English.
