Così fan tutte
The cast assembled for this performance of Così fan tutte brings not only exceptional ensemble work and vocal polish, but also a sense of emotional truth that gives the comedy genuine depth. Elisabeth Söderström is in top vocal form, her soprano effortless and expressive throughout. Graziella Sciutti offers a delightfully down-to-earth Despina, full of charm and character. Robert Kerns provides some of the evening's most beautiful singing—his rich baritone and elegant phrasing leave one wondering why his career didn't reach greater heights. Geraint Evans is ideally cast as Don Alfonso, his mix of cynical wisdom and lyrical finesse lending the role real weight. While the sound is not ideal—audience noise is present, and part of Act II (including "Per pietà") is missing—the vocal performances make this a valuable and affecting document of Mozart interpretation in its finest humanistic spirit.

Fine, Incomplete Performance in Good Sound!
I put off acquiring this performance for a while because it's missing a substantial portion of Act Two. All of the music after Guglielmo and Dorabella's duet "Il core vi dono" is missing and we pick up at the recitative before Dorabella's "E amore un ladroncello". That leaves out Fiordiligi's "Per pieta", an aria I'm sure Soderstrom sang very well indeed. I am grateful for what does exist though because this a fine performance. The six soloists are all excellent individually and in ensemble. This was recorded by a fidgety person so there are some extraneous shuffling noises, but the tapist finally settles down. The singers are a little recessed though certainly audible.I hope Andy will make the entire performance available if a more complete copy emerges. Fans of the singers should acquire this, despite the missing music: they're that good.
