Carlo Bergonzi was one of those rare singers, and he brings both qualities to striking effect in this performance as Werther. Sung in Italian, the language shift slightly alters the feel of the music, but the Italian cast handles the vernacular with natural ease. Bianca Maria Casoni delivers a vibrant performance with rich, dark tones, though at times the role calls for a greater delicacy than her voice provides. The rest of the cast is solid, but the evening unquestionably belongs to Bergonzi.
