Manon

This German-language Manon offers an illuminating glimpse of Sena Jurinac at an early stage in her career. Later celebrated for the poise and refinement she brought to Mozart and Strauss, she appears here as a 20-year-old courtesan with a notably different emphasis. The voice carries a youthful shimmer, and there is an unexpected ease in the coloratura writing, dispatched with fluency and spontaneity. At the same time, her characterization does not remain merely superficial; in the St. Sulpice scene in particular, she suggests a developing interpretive instinct, shaping the emotional trajectory with care.

Anton Dermota lends an elegant presence to Des Grieux, his phrasing marked by musical sensitivity and stylistic awareness. Yet for all its refinement, the portrayal stops short of full emotional urgency, and one occasionally senses a degree of reserve where greater ardor might have deepened the dramatic effect.
