Manon
If you love this opera, or if you love Beverly Sills and Nicolai Gedda, then this could be one of those sets that seems to occupy a permanent spot next to the stereo. Sills and Gedda are at their absolute best and achieve a rapport that is electric. Gedda in particular seems inspired to new levels of abandon that I had hitherto not associated with this singer while Sills conveys all of the complexities of the title role even in the midst of delivering some very impressive vocal gymnastics.

Classic Manon for the Ages!
This performance has already received great praise from Andy and another reviewer and deservedly so. This was one of Sills' best roles and she was captured here before the strain of singing the Tudor Queens began to tell on her voice. The lyricism, the bell-like high notes, the dazzling coloratura are all heard in a classic performance. She does not offer the additional Fabliau that she did in San Francisco (that's a lot of G major anyway), but her Gavotte is stunning.Gedda offers another tremendous performance. He sounds more comfortable with Sills than he did with Moffo about seven years earlier. The supporting cast is also excellent. Maag gives us more of the score than we normally get and knows how to follow and then lead his singers when appropriate. The sound is from a very good mono broadcast with no glitches that I heard.The Pirate Gods were smiling on this cast. If you love the singers or the opera, you need this!
