Hérodiade
Jules Massenet (1842 - 1912)
DESCRIPTION
Marisa Galvany brings a measure of glamour and allure to what might be considered the “other” Salome, shaping the role with a blend of French refinement and a hint of Straussian intensity. The result is a characterization that balances elegance with flashes of dramatic edge, without tipping too far in either direction.
As Hérode, Louis Quilico offers a notably warm portrayal, at times lending the character an unexpected degree of sympathy. If anything, it is this very warmth that slightly softens the role’s more abrasive qualities creating a slight dramatic incongruity. In the title role, Mignon Dunn returns to familiar territory—though better known in the context of Strauss—bringing with her a temperament that relishes the role’s theatrical opportunities.
Patricia Brooks makes a strong impression as the young Babylonian woman, her contribution adding further distinction to the ensemble.
