Pietro Mascagni never achieved the success of his early hit Cavalleria Rusticana, but that does not mean that his musical style didn't continue to evolve. Isabeau, premiered in 1911, capitalizes on the harmonic advances of the 20th century, employing modality in creative ways to convey the medieval atmosphere.
