Cavalleria Rusticana

This performance of Cavalleria Rusticana showcases the great and versatile British soprano, Amy Shuard, in the role of Santuzza. Until her untimely passing, Shuard was a cornerstone of London's operatic scene, excelling in the major roles of Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, and even Janáček. Her soprano was both opulent and steely, with remarkable evenness across all registers.

She is joined by the capable Turiddù of Carlo Cossutta, while Yvonne Minton makes an impression as Lola.

Very Good Performance in Good Sound!

Amy Shuard finds her own way in the role of Santuzza, a role that vocally presents no difficulties for her. After Simionato or Cossotto Shuard may seem slightly tame, but she really digs into the confrontation with Alfio and convinces us she means business. I think she sings the top C at the end, but that may be the choral sopranos. She and Cossutta sing and act their roles passionately without resorting to chewing the carpet ( not inappropriate in this opera). Cossutta is especially good in his last aria. Bainbridge is a sturdy, no-nonsense Mamma Lucia, Minton a sexy Lola, and Bisson a somewhat unsteady, but intimidating Alfio. Whoever does the final "Hanno ammazzato" line delivers it with the uninhibited ferocity it must have for the opera to end with a bang. The chorus sings beautifully while Balkwill leads a strong performance. The sound must be from a house tape (some coughs are very close to the microphone), but the voices are always clearly heard.

Die Sänger sind gut aber auf Grund der schlechten Tonqualität bei manchen Passagen ergibt sich kein befriedigendes Gesamtbild
