By 1971 it is fair to say that Leyla Gencer's voice had lost some of the luster from her early years. On the other side her voice began to develop a darker hue and, register breaks notwithstanding, she uses this new found vocal color to her favor as Santuzza. And the lack of vocal freshness seems almost to be liberating to her as she throws herself into the role in a way that may not have been possible with her bel canto parts. The rest of the cast is very good and the sound is excellent.
