Gwyneth Jones had only recently begun to sing soprano roles when this performance was given. She had jumped in for Leontyne Price a year or so earlier in Il Trovatore. Her voice sounds young, fresh, and wobble- free. There are no hints of the squalliness that would begin to overtake her singing a decade later. She is not the most impassioned of Santuzzas (at least not yet). She sings the famous "Bada! A te la mala Pasqua!", her interpretation a little cool. She sings beautifully with a great final top C.I agree with James Mertins' opinion below: Cossutta is the star of the show. His top notes ring out and he sounds very comfortable in the role. The supporting cast is excellent and the unnamed lady who screams the final line is hair raising! Balkwill conducts convincingly. The sound is listenable, the voices slightly recessed, but audible. My copy was afflicted with some file corruption in the last five minutes or so.For fans of the singers.

Cossuta is in top form here. G. Jones not so much, but she iz ok. ronald Lewis is powerful as Alfio, others are fine. Balkwill conducts with great zeal. Highly recommended.
