This performance of Cavalleria Rusticana belongs to Gwyneth Jones. Still in her twenties, and only two years removed from her historic Covent Garden breakthrough when she replaced Leontyne Price at the last moment in Il Trovatore, Jones brings youthful vigor to Santuzza. Her portrayal aligns more closely with Giovanni Verga's original conception of the character in the short story upon which the opera is based, emphasizing both her vulnerability and fiery determination.
Carlo Cossutta, as Turiddu, matches Jones with an ideal balance of lyricism and verismo intensity. Yvonne Minton also makes much of her brief appearance as Lola, leaving a memorable impression despite the role's limited stage time.
