Martina Arroyo

This concert, recorded when Martina Arroyo was just 30 years old, finds the soprano in splendid voice, singing arias from Louise, L’Africaine, La Rondine, Cavalleria Rusticana, and La Forza del destino. Even at this early point in her career, her tone is full and secure, with an easy command of both lyrical passages and more dramatic moments. The program offers a well-chosen range of styles, and she moves effortlessly between French and Italian repertoire.

To give Arroyo a brief rest between numbers, the orchestra performs the overture to Cherubini’s Anacreon. It is an engaging and somewhat uncommon piece, neatly shaped and full of character—an appealing glimpse of an opera not often encountered.

The recorded sound is slightly muffled, which diminishes some of the immediacy of the live occasion. Still, the quality of the singing comes through clearly enough to make the performance rewarding.

Arroyo Was a Very Special Singer!

As Perry writes below, the first 35 minutes of this disc are devoted to a concert given for Amsterdam radio in 1970. Arroyo is heard in her prime, shining in every number she sings. What's interesting here are the arias from Louise, L'Africaine, and La Rondine that Arroyo would not return to very often. She did sing a complete performance of L'Africaine for German radio (it was once on the Myto label), but as far as I know she did not sing the other operas complete. The sound is slightly muffled, but clear and on pitch. The other selections are drawn from earlier Opera Depot releases and they are all worth having. I'd love it if Andy would republish the L'Africaine broadcast. It also has Giorgio Lamberti and Sherrill Milnes and is in excellent sound (and is more complete than most performances of that opera). We can always dream...

Bel Canto Fan

I fell in love with Martina's voice when listening to a Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani commercial recording. This disc is in two parts. The first part of approx. 35 minutes is the concert and is a bit fuzzy, but not overly so. The second part of Verdi arias is approx. 42 minutes and is better quality and shows her voice to good effect. This would be the best of the compilations I have purchased as the other compilations are more varied in volume. I am quite happy to add this disc to my collection.
