Mödl is Mödl in an Unusual Role!

I don't know how often Mödl sang Octavian. In these bleeding chunk excerpts, Mödl captures the young man's impetuous, passionate nature, but also his occasional clumsiness. Vocally, she manages, but her tone isn't as rich and steady as it still could be in 1952 and the high tessitura is a challenge for her. What little we hear of Clara Ebers as the Marschallin makes me wish the entire performance had survived. Nothing of the final half hour of Act 1 is here. Della Casa sings sweetly as Sophie. The famous trio begins a bit late; the final duet is shorn of the last few vocal moments. The sound is mediocre, but at least is on pitch - until the final trio/duet which is pitched a half-step flat; maybe Andy will fix this as he has some of his other earlier releases. To fill up the disc (the Rosenkavalier excerpts only run 40 minutes or so) Mödl is heard in excerpts from operas performed later in her career. One hears her vocal decline, but also why she was so mesmerizing. For Mödl fans.
