Mahler's stunning Das Lied von der Erde gets a beautiful performance here from the soloists and Sebastian. In 1969 this music lay in the best part of Gorr's voice and she is heartbreaking. MacDonald is terrific in the tenor solos singing with firm, ringing tone and complete involvement. Sebastian leads a world-weary, moving performance that deserves to be better known. The sound is excellent. Gorr's Mahler from nearly a decade earlier is also first-rate. The sound is good broadcast mono with no glitches (though the final chord of the last song is cut off rather abruptly.)Gorr fans shouldn't hesitate and neither should Mahler's!

Two great performances of Gustav Mahler's masterpieces "Das Lied von der Erde" and "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen". If Rita Gorr's deep and opulent mezzo-soprano voice is no longer a surprise (she was in her prime then), the great surprise is Kenneth MacDonald's fine tenor voice who matches hers. This is a very good live performance. The tenor part has strained all tenors I have heard on various recordings and it strains Mr. MacDonald in this performance. He does, however, a very credible job in this concert performance. Ms. Gorr has a full voice and does a very good job in a difficult piece. I enjoyed her performance very much. The sound is very good and the bonus material adds to the value of this disc. I highly recommend this performance.

I loved Kenneth Macdonald's singing - outwith his usual repertoire. Rita G and conductor and orchestra also very fine .
