Pagliacci
While Pagliacci might seem an unlikely fit for an all-German cast, this performance proves that a touch of German musical sensibility can cast new light on Ruggero Leoncavallo’s brutally beautiful opera. In the title role, Hans Hopf brings the same searing intensity and raw despair to Canio that he famously brought to Tristan while also displaying his knack for legato singing.
Melitta Muszely is a name that has faded from prominence, which is unfortunate—her winsome voice, capable of remarkable versatility, is perfectly suited to Nedda, a role that always poses a casting challenge.
A young Hermann Prey sings Silvio with elegance and charm. The natural beauty of his voice—paired with the conviction he brings to the role —makes a compelling case for why Nedda would be tempted to run off with him.
At the podium, Nello Santi anchors the performance, providing a vital infusion of authentic Italianate pathos that brings the entire evening into focus.
