Leoncavallo: Pagliacci - Mauro, Niska. Elvira, Cossa; Martelli. 1976

$5.95

Description:

This performance of Pagliacci is a compelling showcase of the remarkable talent that populated regional opera companies in the 1970s. Ermanno Mauro brings a distinctly Italianate style to the role of Canio, though his interpretation sometimes leans toward caution, lacking the unrestrained emotional intensity the part can demand. Maralin Niska fully inhabits Nedda, portraying her as both sadistic and ultimately broken by the harshness of her world, adding emotional complexity to the opera’s tragic arc. The evening’s most impressive vocalism comes from Pablo Elivro, who delivers with both technical brilliance and deep feeling—pushing the role’s boundaries with bold interpolated high notes. The sound is generally good, though the voices occasionally feel a bit distant.
