Ruth
Lennox Berkeley's operatic treatment of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz is less than dramatic, but Charles Mackerras makes a strong case for the work's value. The cast is strong, led by an incisive Peter Pears and the creamy-voiced soprano Anna Pollack, but where Berkeley really shines is in his Britten-esque choral dances, which Mackerras and the forces of the English Opera Group give full sway. This is not perhaps an opera on anyone's bucket list, but Mackerras practically demands attention for this ancient love story.

Excellent Performance of a Rarely Heard Opera!
Despite some research, I wasn't able to find out whether or not this performance was the actual world premiere. Berkeley's beautiful and interesting music makes a fine opera of the tale of Ruth and her unwavering loyalty to her mother-in-law. If you like Britten or Tibbett's music, you'll really enjoy this.All of the soloists are first-rate, not only singing well, but with excellent diction too. The recording also includes the announcer's synopsis, making it very accessible despite the lack of documentation. The cast is stellar (look at those names!). Mackerras demonstrates again that there was little he couldn't conduct well. The sound is excellent broadcast mono from the BBC with no glitches I heard. One of Opera Depot's top Sleeper recordings!
