The Makropulos Case
In the 1960s and 1970s Janacek was enjoying a revival in Great Britain thanks in great part to the efforts of Sir Charles Mackerras. Some of that credit, however, also goes to soprano Marie Collier who created many memorable evenings as Jenufa and Emilia Marty. When Collier died under mysterious circumstances in 1971, Lorna Haywood inherited many of her roles. Haywood's voice was somewhat similar to Collier's. It was slender yet steely which meant that she could bring a youthful innocence to heavier parts including even Sieglinde which she sang in Goodall's legendary Ring. She is joined by an excellent cast of Sadler's Wells veterans including Raimund Herincx, Tom Swift, Kenneth Woollam and Ramon Remedios. Charles Mackerras proves why he was such an effective advocate for the operas of Janacek.

Another Great Performance of Janacek's Opera!
This performance is every bit as good as the other Mackerras-led performances. The cast is different, namely thec title role sung here by Lorna Haywood. Her voice was rather different from Collier's unique sound. It is certainly an attractive one, but powerful and colorful, just right for this character. Her interpretation is angrier than Collier's in the last scene, she nearly snarls at the besotted men a few times. She sounds genuinely relieved to be leaving this

She sounds genuinely relieved to be leaving this world. Haywood's voice is much steadier here than it was to become later on in her career.Kenneth Woolam is a passionate Gregor. The part almost sounds too high for him at times, but he makes it work. Herincx remains a vivid Prus, the tone not quite as steady as in the earlier recordings, but that hardly matters in this role. Again, everyone sounds like their characters to perfection. As a filler, Collier's final scene from the 1971 recording is given so one can compare both divas in the same scene very readily. The sound is once again excellent. Really I don't know a better advocate for this opera than the three ENO recordings in Opera Depot's catalogue. Once you've learned the opera in English try the original Czech or the French version with Soderstrom. Janacek's genius is always rewarding.
