Janacek: Jenufa (In English) - Fine, Tinsley, Cathcart, Dempsey; Gibson. Glasgow, 1977
$9.95
Description:
This performance of Jenůfa is especially notable for the superb Kostelnička of Pauline Tinsley. Having triumphed opposite Beverly Sills in Maria Stuarda just five years earlier, Tinsley reveals remarkable versatility and dramatic command in one of Janáček’s most emotionally charged roles. It is refreshing to hear a soprano in this part whose voice retains youthful vibrancy—often a rarity—but Tinsley doesn’t rely on vocal freshness alone. She brings an emotional intensity reminiscent of verismo, while steering clear of exaggeration or melodrama.
Wendy Fine is an excellent Jenůfa, especially notable for her crystal-clear delivery of the fine English translation used in this performance. Allen Cathcart offers a poetic, introspective Laca—a welcome departure from the more brutish interpretations often encountered. The sound is excellent.
