This performance features Pilar Lorengar, whose pure and sterling soprano seems to perfectly embody the title role, as if it had been written for her. Anny Schlemm, who began her career as a lyric soprano, brings a sense of menace to the role of Kostelnicka, while also imbuing the character with a vulnerability that is particularly moving in her Act II scenes with Jenufa.

A must have for all fans of Pilar Lorengar
Although Pilar herself thought it was not the ideal role for her, it is still more than worth listening how she creates the character and how she fills the lines with the beauty of her voice. She always gave all her heart into her art making her become the role she sang. Not to mention that Anny Schlemm was of course one of the great singer-actresses of her time and is a role model for any young singer when it comes to phrasing and diction.
